Industry Overview
- RV ownership has reached record levels with about nine
million RVs in the United States and 25 million people who
use them
- People living longer and entering market earlier has contributed
to the expansion with nearly one in twelve vehicle-owning
households owning an RV
- Industry size is about $16 billion
- RV shipments for 2005 are estimated at 359,000 units,
or the second best year since 1978. Recent history of RV
shipments:
- 2004 370,100 + 15.4% YOY growth
- 2003 320,800 + 3.2% YOY growth
- Despite higher fuel prices, RV usage remains strong:
- RV rentals up 22% in 2005
- A recent study suggest that a family of four can
spend 26 to 74% less on RV trips, compared to other
vacation types
- Many RV owners treat an RV as a second home for tax
purposes
- RVs are a chosen form of camping for some; an alternative
lifestyle for others; a vacation cottage; or can also
serve as full-time affordable housing
